What’s This Life For

A new day dawns
I roll out of bed
Stumble down the hall
And comb my messy head

I stagger to the kitchen
And grab myself a cup
Listen to the dogs bark
Wishing they’d shut up

I read the morning paper
Troubled news on every page
Mr. Rogers met his maker
Joe can’t make a living wage

The TV heads are howling
About the foolish war in Iraq
30,000 soldiers injured
4,000 didn’t make it back

I step into the shower
To clear my cloudy head
Wanting nothing more than
To crawl back into bed

But the monthly bills are calling
So I force myself to dress
Step into the office
And begin the game of chess

So many pawns in this game
Trying to reach the eighth rank
Looking for that promotion
To fatten their savings at the bank

Another work day endured
I leave the game behind
Grab myself a cold one
Crank the tunes to help unwind

Darkness descends upon me
Feeling aimless and remote
I close my eyes and linger
As my mind begins to float

One more day is finished
Much like the ones before
I long for the grand discovery
Of what this life is for
